Pros

  • Allo essentially introduced Google Assistant to the world
  • All the standard instant messaging features are included here

Cons

  • Google shut down Allo in March 2019
  • Allo couldn't stand out in a crowded field of instant messaging apps

Google Allo was an instant messaging platform developed for Android devices. Upon release, Google wanted to compete with apps like Messenger and WhatsApp. A large number of features, including Google Assistant, were baked into the app. The program attempted to let users do everything and mostly succeeded on that front. Initial interest for the app remained high before release, and plenty of people signed up for Allo on release.

Within the app, users could connect to their contacts by phone number or Allo account. They could then instant message those friends within seconds. The messaging client allowed users to share photos, videos, GIFs, and even voice messages. Also, users could create group messages and integrate Google search results into chats. Google Allo essentially did everything that its competitors offered.

Perhaps the biggest benefit of Allo revolved around Google Assistant integration. Allo introduced the world to the possibilities of Google Assistant. Since then, Assistant has become ubiquitous with the Android operating system. Otherwise, Allo never did enough to stand out and suffered from waning interest after a few months. The app didn't stand out enough from the instant messaging behemoths that had already established themselves.

The Google Allo app itself never suffered from major issues aside from disappointing usage numbers. Every feature within the app worked, and the entire process was seamless for Android users. In the end, Google Allo lives on through the Messages app, and Google Assistant is now installed on millions of Android smartphones and tablets. Google shut down Google Allo in March of 2019, and support is no longer available for the app.
